It may be that it appreciates the extra moisture for the roots from the thick clump. I  would never have considered growing it in sphagnum. At a recent show and tell  meeting I saw another grower who had bought some Den. bracteosum alba seedlings  from the same source and at the same time as I had a couple of years ago. Her plant  is now three times as tall far more robust and carrying five times as many flowers  as mine.  Who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks.
