Eria albidotomentosa [Bl] Lindl.1830
by Neville Bone
I obtained this orchid in June 2005 as mature plant. I now have 2 plants one growing
in my cool glass house and one growing under 50% shade cloth in the bush house.
Both seem to be doing equally as well as each other. They are both potted in a mix of
perlite & peat (coco husk peat) at the rate of 2 to 1. they are both potted in seedling
/saucer trays about 5cm deep. The watering is 3 times a week in summer & 2 times a
week in winter on sunny days. The fertiliser has been once a week (but not at the
moment as my fertiliser equipment has broken). This is the first flowering for me in 4
years & I am very pleased with the result, some of the largest & most colourful
flowers in the Earia family. According to the literature I have it has a musky sent,
grows as an epiphyte or terrestrial in light shade in the evergreen forests of South East
Asia, & it flowers in the autumn, carrying up to 15 flowers.
